Outside the recovery room, Kathleen Maguire was a banshee. Glenn Hobart kept a hand around her waist to protect Jackson Caldwell. “How could you do that to her? Did you see what happened in there?” she shrieked.

“Jackson, don’t answer her,” his high-priced attorney advised.

Muriel Caldwell tried to broker the peace. “Jackson, Kathleen. Let’s be adults about this.”

Kathleen screamed, “Tell your miserable son that. Finola doesn’t want him near her.”

“Jackson, is that what Finola said?” his mother asked.

“Mom, she’s on a bunch of medications. She’s intubated. She isn’t making sense.”

“Sense? She shoved and kicked at you. Her heartrate rose so high, she needed to be sedated. Before she was hurt, she made complete sense. She told you she would never marry you. She ended your engagement weeks ago. Stanley, you confirmed that to the police. Yet somehow that moron of a judge took your side.” Kathleen’s voice was shrill. “And if anyone killed that pregnancy, it was you when you almost beat her to death.”

Zach Wentworth pushed into the corridor and spoke to the attorney. “If you don’t want this to become a huge sideshow, I suggest you get your client out of here now.”

“Kathleen, what do you mean, killed a pregnancy?” Muriel Caldwell asked.

Kathleen burned with rage. “Jackson, tell your mother how Finola miscarried because of the beating. Tell your parents how often you used Finola as a punching bag. Tell them about all your fingermarks around her throat and on her arms.”

Stanley Caldwell looked at his son with questioning eyes. “Jackson, we have a lot to speak about. None of which we will do here.”

Stanley extended his hand to Zach and then to Glenn. “Thank you, gentlemen. My son won’t bother Finola again. Kathleen, I’m sorry about your daughter.” He forcefully guided his wife and son toward the elevators.
